In this blog we’ll be exploring two of Chicago’s trendiest neighborhoods: Lakeshore East and Streeterville. Check out our recommendations below for places to explore in both neighborhoods. If you’re trying to decide where to purchase your next condo, give this a read and see if either of these neighborhoods catch your eye.
Lakeshore East vs. Streeterville
Located where the Chicago River and the Lake meet, lies Lakeshore East! This neighborhood has a prime location downtown near the Loop and is rapidly becoming one of Chicago’s most sought after neighborhoods. Lakeshore East is ideal for anyone wanting a little quiet while also being close to all of the action downtown.
Streeterville is located right between the Lake and Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago. It has a great location with convenient access to the highway as well as several modes of public transportation options. Streeterville has restaurants, nightlife, and wonderful residential options. Streeterville is also one of Chicago’s best neighborhoods!
History and Unique Attributes
Lakeshore East was originally home to the Illinois Central Railroad Yards before becoming a 9 hole golf course from 1994 to 2001. After the golf course closed, the area has been revitalized into repurposed buildings and is now positioned as prime real estate for Chicagoans.
Streeterville has a very unique history and is home to the John Hancock Center and The Chicago Water Tower, which serve as the Chicago Office of Tourism’s Art gallery.
Work and Industries
Streeterville has jobs in retail and service, and this area is also home to NBC Tower, Northwestern Hospital, and Lurie Children’s Hospital.
Dining and Nightlife
Lakeshore East is home to a variety of bars and restaurants. Check out Eggy’s Diner if you’re looking for a breakfast spot to start your day. In the evening, we recommend 3 Forks Steakhouse, Elephant and Castle, and the lower level of Swissotel Chicago Hotel for good food and beverages.
Streeterville is home to restaurants such as Beatrix, Hampton Social, Volare, Purple Pig, and Capital Grill. If you’re looking to grab a drink, we recommend Streeterville Social, Billy Goat Tavern, Three Dots and a Dash, and The Signature Lounge at the 96th.
Arts and Culture
Lakeshore East borders Millenium Park and the Chicago River Walk which are all home to beautiful views and unique Chicago architecture.
Shopping and Activities
Streeterville has more shopping options than you could imagine with Water Tower Place and the Magnificent Mile.
If you need a break from shopping, be sure to check out Lakeshore East Park. Lakeshore East Park is a 6 acre botanical recreational garden in the middle of the neighborhood. It is also Chicago’s first and only free wireless park.
Education
As far as education goes, Streeterville has Northwestern University’s Downtown Chicago Campus as well as the University of Chicago Gleacher Center.
