If you can’t decide where to purchase your next condo between these two neighborhoods, read through this blog and see if either of these prime Chicago neighborhoods are a good fit for you!

Gold Coast vs. Lakeshore East

South of North Ave. and east of LaSalle Street, Gold Coast is one of Chicago’s trendiest neighborhoods. Gold Coast has everything you could want, with its great location, proximity to the lake, restaurants, and nightlife as well.

Where the River and the Lake meet, you can find Lakeshore East. Lakeshore East is a neighborhood that has a prime location downtown near the Loop. It is quickly becoming one of Chicago’s favorite neighborhoods. Lakeshore East is ideal for anyone wanting a little peace and quiet, while also being close to all of the hustle and bustle of living downtown.

History and Unique Attributes

The Gold Coast Historic District has multiple historic landmarks and is a part of the National Register of Historic Places. Gold Coast is also home to Oak Street Beach.

Lakeshore East used to be a 9 hole golf course from 1994 up until 2001. Since the golf course has closed, the area has been revitalized into repurposed living spaces and is now positioned as prime real estate for Chicagoans. Lakeshore East still maintains that open space feel, and is 40% green.

Dining and Nightlife

Gold Coast has fantastic restaurants and spectacular nightlife including Gibson’s Bar and Steakhouse, Nico Osteria, and 360 Chicago.

Lakeshore East is home to a variety of bars and restaurants. Check out Eggy’s Diner if you’re looking for a breakfast spot to start your day. In the evening, we recommend 3 Forks Steakhouse, Elephant and Castle, and the lower level of Swissotel Chicago Hotel for good food and beverages.

Arts and Culture

We highly recommend checking out the Museum of Contemporary Art when you’re exploring Gold Coast.

Lakeshore East borders Millenium Park and the Chicago River Walk, which are all home to beautiful views and unique Chicago architecture.

Shopping and Activities

One of our favorite spots in Gold Coast is Restoration Hardware on Dearborn and Goethe. It’s an upscale shopping experience like you’ve never seen before. While you’re there, definitely check out the cafe as well. Additionally, the Oak Street Shopping District is also located in Gold Coast and is home to upscale designers and luxury brands.

If you need a break from shopping, check out Lakeshore East Park! Lakeshore East Park is a 6 acre botanical recreational garden in the middle of the neighborhood. It is also Chicago’s first and only free wireless park.

Highlights of Each Neighborhood

Streeterville- Bounded by the Chicago River, the Magnificent Mile, and Lake Michigan, Streeterville finds itself smack dab in the middle of Chicago’s hottest landmarks.

The neighborhood also houses many well-respected establishments, including Northwestern University Downtown Campus, University of Chicago Gleacher Center, NBC Tower, Northwestern Hospital, and Lurie Children’s Hospital.

With such a competitive location, it’s no surprise that Streeterville is a happening place. The neighborhood is full of working professionals, students, and visitors working, studying, and residing.

Gold Coast-  Located directly North of Streeterville along the lake, the Gold Coast neighborhood is a bit quieter and more residential.

Strolling through the charming and affluent neighborhood, you’ll find a great mix of historic mansions, modern high-rise apartments, upscale shopping, and exquisite dining.

What Makes Each Unique

The Streeterville neighborhood is unique for its surplus of notorious Windy City Attractions.

Right Along the Lake, sits the infamous Navy Pier where you can find popular activities like the Centennial Wheel and Chicago Shakespeare Theatre. Boat tours and cruises also depart daily from the Pier during the suitable seasons.

With the Magnificent Mile located right along the West edge of the neighborhood, Streeterville offers some of the most high-end retail in the city, from Saks Fifth Avenue to Gucci.

Streeterville also offers an unrivaled and quirky history. The story of the neighborhood’s growth revolves all around Captain George Streeter’s attempt to claim, sell, and tax a sandbar off the Chicago Harbor. While his efforts were disrupted, his legacy remains.

While Streeterville provides its fair share of luxury living, Gold Coast is known for its affluence. It currently ranks as the seventh wealthiest urban areas in the country.

In 1978 the Gold Coast Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places to preserve the area’s notable history, dating back to the early 1800s. This historic district is bounded by North Avenue, Lake Shore Drive, Oak Street, and Lake Street.
