History and Other Unique Attributes
Originally Lincoln Park was called “Lake Park” after the 60 acres of sprawling lakeside green space. In 1865, the neighborhood changed its name to what we now know it as to honor Abraham Lincoln after his assassination. While the area has a complex history, over the last fifty years, the neighborhood has remained a popular place to live, raise a family, and visit.
Wicker Park didn’t become the diverse and trendy spot it is today until the last couple of decades. Before then, the area was considered Polish Downtown and later Puerto Rican Downtown. Ten years ago, Forbes named Wicker Park one of the hippest neighborhoods in the country.
Dining and Nightlife
If you’re a self-proclaimed foodie, you can’t go wrong living in Wicker Park or Lincoln Park. Both areas have excellent spots to grab a drink, bite to eat, or night on the town.
Neither places are known for many chains, but instead have a lot of truly local restaurants. Division Street and Milwaukee Street are home to many of Wicker Park’s most popular restaurants.
Lincoln Park’s best eateries are a bit more scattered throughout the neighborhood, but you can find some great spots along Lincoln Avenue and Halsted Street.
Arts and Culture
Wicker Park definitely takes the prize in this department. It attracts plenty of young artists and therefore boasts a creative culture. The neighborhood is sprinkled with hip art galleries and cool venues.
Throughout the nice months, you can also find plenty of art and music festivals happening in the area.
Education
Both Lincoln Park and Wicker Park offer plenty of public school options for children and teenagers.
Lincoln Park is the only neighborhood out of the two known for traditional higher education. The area is home to DePaul, a prestigious and private Catholic university.
Wicker Park is home to the University of Aesthetics and Cosmetology.
